Medical Evidence in Adult Dependent Relative Visa Applications

Medical Evidence

The UK Adult Dependent Relative visa enables close overseas family members in serious need of long-term personal care to come to the UK to be cared for by the person settled here. Any individual settled in the UK can bring an adult dependent relative such as an elderly parent or grandparents on an Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) visa.

Eligibility requirements for adult-dependent relative visa

The requirements for ADR visa applications are set out in the Section EC-DR of Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules.

  • The applicant must be over 18 years old to be considered adult dependent
  • The dependent has a sponsoring relative in the UK who either has British citizenship or refugee or humanitarian protection status
  • The applicant needs long-term personal care due to age, disability, or illness
  • The UK sponsor must provide evidence to prove that they are capable of supporting the dependent without seeking recourse to UK public funds for at least 5 years
  • The care that the dependent requires is not available in the country of origin.

Medical evidence for adult-dependent relative visa application

The necessary starting point is collecting medical evidence which confirms the dependent’s health condition and needs for long-term personal care. Moreover, the following evidence must be provided when applying for ADR

  • Independent medical record explaining the applicant’s mental and physical condition and his inability to do everyday tasks
  • Medical evidence must be from a doctor, health professional, central, or local health authority
  • Evidence showing the required level of care is not available in the country they are living in
  • Evidence showing that the applicant needs long-term personal care

The applicant must submit relevant evidence in support of an Adult Dependent Relative visa application. The evidence must show that the adult dependent needs long-term personal care and can not perform daily household chores like washing, cooking, and dressing.

The need for personal care can also be due to an illness, a serious accident, or a progressive decline in health. The caseworker may refer the person for medical examination. Additionally, attach an expert medical report by a qualified medical professional with the visa application.

Evidence showing that the applicant cannot get the required level of care in the country where they are living

The applicant must prove that they can not get the ‘required level of care’ in the country of origin and there is no close blood relative to reasonably provide it. Furthermore, the dependent cannot get the personal care needed even with the practical and financial help of the sponsor in the UK.

The medical evidence must be provided by the doctor, health professional, a central or local health authority, or a local authority of the country in question.

Evidence showing adequate resources to support the adult dependent

Obtaining an ADR visa can be an intricate process, the sponsor in the UK must submit evidence showing that they have adequate resources to support the dependent in the UK whilst asserting the lack of resources to pay for the required care in the applicant’s country.
